Fall and winter in Savannah are both magical times. The tourist season is wrapping up, the weather is generally mild, and there are still lots of special events and performances through the shoulder-season months.

When to Visit Fall and Winter in Savannah

November and December mean festive holiday decorations and lights all over the city as well as special events and performances. Get in the holiday spirit with the Holiday Tour of Homes and get a peek at some of Savannah’s most beautiful homes, decked out in boughs of holly (and then some). If it’s holiday shopping you’re after, you will certainly find something for everyone in one of the many unique stores and markets in Savannah.

January and February are very much the “off season” in Savannah, so if you are a fan of less crowds and even cooler temperatures, this may be the best time to plan your trip. February brings the Savannah Book Festival, an event that attracts well-known authors, emerging writers, and literary fans together for a weekend of signings, meet-and-greets, and special readings when you visit fall and winter in Savannah.

What to Bring

When vacationing in fall and winter in Savannah, it’s important to know what to bring. Although winters are mild, they can also be unpredictable and rainy. Make sure you pack layers for those warm days that turn to cooler-than-expected nights, and don’t forget a light rain jacket and umbrella. Just be prepared for temperatures anywhere from 40 degrees to 70 degrees…Southern winters can be fickle.

What to Do

If you aren’t planning a trip during one of our events (or if events aren’t really your thing), winter is a fun time to visit all the sites and scenes of Savannah, but without the crowds (and mosquitos). Enjoy a bike or walking tour, hike the nature trail of Tom Triplett Park or Skidaway Island State Park. If the temperatures dip a little low or if it starts raining, take advantage of the many indoor museums including SCAD Museum of Art, Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, or the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum.
