We’re rolling right into summer, and that means prime beach season. Tybee Island, just 18 miles from Savannah, Ga. offers some of the top-rated beaches in the country. Whether you enjoy soaking up rays or water sports, this island offers a little bit of everything.
1. All Beaches Have Something Different to Offer
Tybee Island is made up of several beaches, so try different ones to see what suits you.
Mid Beach is usually a little less crowded and stretches from the Curve on 1st Street to South Beach on 14th Street. There are fewer amenities at Mid Beach, but it’s great if you’re staying in one of our nearby Tybee Island rentals.
South Beach is the island’s busiest spot and has the biggest parking lot, between 14th and 18th streets.
North Beach is located across from Tybee Lighthouse and is the closest beach to Savannah. It’s a great place to do some nature walking with a lot of marsh areas.
2. Not all Beaches are on the Ocean
Tybee has two river beaches: The Savannah River and Back River beaches are located on opposite ends of the island. Savannah River Beach is the quieter of the two. Back River Beach on the southern end of the island is off Tybee Creek and makes a great launching point for kayaking.
3. The Best Beach is Only Reachable by Boat
The only way to get to Little Tybee Island is by water. Go to Bull River Marina for boat rentals or take a guided tour with Sea Kayak Georgia or other outfitters. Little Tybee Island is great for fossil hunting, beachcombing, and nature walks.
4. Tybee Island Beaches are Perfect for Surfing
To catch some waves, go past 19th Street on South Beach. It’s the perfect spot for beginner surfers with small waves. Take lessons or rent a board from one of the local surf schools.
5. There is Great Beachside Dining
You’re gonna work up an appetite playing on Tybee Island beaches, but that’s no problem because there are more than 30 eateries where you can dive into delicious seafood, savor Southern favorites or chow down on All-American burgers and pizza. Enjoy an ice-cold beer on an outside deck. The dress code is always casual, so you can come straight from the beach.
