The Green Meldrim House Savannah Historic Attraction is a historic mansion on the corner of Madison Square in Savannah. About the House
In keeping with the Gothic Revival aesthetic, the woodwork on the first floor is American black walnut with intricate crown moldings, and silver-plated door knobs. The house also has the original chandeliers and gold-leaf framed mirrors from Austria. Other unique features of this house include three sets of doors in the front entrance, two of which fold in to create side closets.
This expansive mansion was built for Charles Green who came to Savannah from England in 1833. The house was designed by New York architect John Morris, who also designed the famous Andrew Low House. Charles Green made his wealth as a cotton merchant, and by 1850 he had a large enough fortune to build the most elaborate house in Savannah. At the time it cost $93,000 to build.
The house became famous not only for its elaborate design and size but also for its role in the Civil War. In 1864, Charles Green offered his home to General William Tecumseh Sherman to use as his headquarters when the Federal army occupied Savannah during the Civil War. General Sherman wrote his famous letter to President Abraham Lincoln from this house, giving him the City of Savannah as a Christmas gift.
In 1892, Peter Meldrim, a local politician and judge, bought the house from Charles Green. In 1943, Peter Meldrim’s heirs sold the estate to St. John’s Church next door, who now uses the home for wedding receptions and church events.
While Savannah is full of historical homes to tour, this one is especially unique because of its history and its grandeur. The house also recently acquired much of the original furniture, historical documents, and artifacts used by Charles Green and General Sherman. Tours are available at the house on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
