Ring in the New Year, Savannah Style

Who else is ready to wash off 2020 and splash into 2021? We are with you! What better way to ring in the New Year than with a getaway to Savannah and the Georgia coast?

COVID-19 restrictions have caused some cancellations of big celebrations, but you can still experience a memorable New Year’s holiday, starting with making that big splash.

The Tybee Polar Plunge, a fundraiser for the Tybee Post Theatre, takes place on Friday, Jan. 1 with a pandemic twist. You can take the plunge from anywhere, including joining the grave souls who will fan out along five miles of beautiful Tybee beaches.

You can also join the Tybee Polar Plunge Facebook group and post your pics or watch the action at TybeePostTheater.org. The action takes place at noon. Registration is $25 for adults and $15 for kids under 12.

Of course, you don’t have to register to take a jump in the Atlantic, but you only get the festive Tybee Polar Plunge T-shirt with a paid registration. A cool feature to this year’s Tee is a masked polar bear.

If jumping into ice-cold water isn’t your preferred way to welcome the New Year, how about a champagne toast and an elegant, multi-course dinner on New Year’s Eve? Vic’s on the River offers a wonderful, fine-dining experience with seatings from 5-10:30 p.m. Be sure to make a reservation in advance.

A Riverboat Cruise is another way to ring in the New Year in true Savannah fashion. Savannah Riverboat Cruises offers their New Year’s Eve Dinner Cruise, boarding at 5 p.m. and returning at 8 p.m. The cruise includes a delicious, buffet-style dinner along with entertainment for the entire family. Tickets start at $49.95 for children.

No children? Opt for the New Year’s Eve Party Cruise, featuring three hours of hors d’oeuvres, entertainment, party favors and a cash bar. Boarding begins at 8:30 p.m. and you’ll have that midnight toast on the water.

Any holiday is a grand time to stroll the squares and historic streets of Savannah, browse the unique shops and dine on delicious cuisine. A stay at a vacation rental in the Historic District puts you close to all the activity.

The four-bedroom, 2.5-bath Henry Cunningham Estate across from Green Square makes a wonderful home-base. The home sleeps up to 12 guests, and offers a large living room, outdoor courtyard and a fully equipped kitchen. With a location at the corner of East and Houston streets, guests can walk to everywhere or take a horse-drawn carriage or pedal cab ride.
