Trade the snow for sand with a wonderful winter vacation to Tybee Island beaches. The beaches make a great escape from ice and cold, with mild temperatures and low humidity year ‘round.

Life on the Island also slows down in the winter months, giving visitors the opportunity to live like a local and really get to know the area.

Book a stay in the four-bedroom Beach House Down for your home-away-from-home. Just steps to the Atlantic Ocean, this home ups the ante on a seaside stay. The large sitting porch makes a serene and refreshing setting for enjoying the ocean breeze. The spacious living area gives plenty of room for family gatherings with a stone fireplace as a lovely focal point.

The convenient location places you within walking distance to some of Tybee Island’s best restaurants, shops and points of interest. Experiencing the Atlantic shoreline’s beauty with a walk along the beach is a popular way to while away a winter day.

Average daily high temps of 60 degrees also make winter a pleasant time to explore the region’s natural marshes and waterways. Book a kayak or stand-up paddle board from an outfitter like Sea Kayak Georgia to get out the calm waters in the Tybee estuary.

If it’s just a little chilly for you to paddle, no worries. There are plenty of other activities to enjoy. Tybee Island’s cobblestone streets lead to beautiful public squares, charming boutiques, artisan lofts and welcoming restaurants. Most of the shops and restaurants are locally owned and are happy to see winter visitors so explore to your heart’s delight.

Fresh seafood is on the menu as shrimp and oyster seasons are in full swing during winter. Get the peel & Eat Shrimp or Low Country Boil at Bubba Gumbo’s on Lazaretto Creek. Head to Bernie’s Oyster House for a dozen oysters on the half-shell. Of course, smaller crowds mean a more relaxing, intimate dining experience.

Then there are the attractions.

The Tybee Island Lighthouse Museum, Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse, dates to 1736 and stands 145 feet tall. Spend the day exploring the museum and grounds, including a yellow, raised cottage that showcases 1900s Tybee architecture.

The Tybee Island Marine Science Center offers year ‘round fun for the whole family. Kids love the touch tank, as well as the gallery collection. Explore Georgia’s salt marsh (and mud) with a Marsh Trek or Sift & Seine experience. The low admission of $5 (free to kids 4 and under) makes the Marine Science Center an affordable and worthwhile venture.

Do you really need any other reasons to book a Tybee Island winter getaway? We didn’t think so.
